SAVE AAREY COLONY As BMC Approves Cutting Of 2,700 Trees In Aarey Forest For Metro Car Shed

Concerned mumbai citizens and environmentalists are up in arms after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Tree Authority gave green signal to the proposal for cutting of 2,702 trees in Aarey Forest for the Metro-3 car shed.

The Tree Authority permitted Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) to cut about 2,232 trees from the mentioned Aarey Colony and translocate the other 469 to make way for the construction of a car service center which is a part of the Mumbai Metro project.

Opposition by Citizen and Local Political Parties:

The Tree Authority gave its permission despite an opposition raised by the Shiv Sena and citizen groups. In the beginning of this month the Tree Authority had withheld permission to cut the trees.

However, activists have alleged that they had not been informed and they are not aware of the meetings taking place.

“We got to know it from the media that the Tree Authority has voted to allow cutting of the trees. We don’t know who voted for it. It is unusual for the Tree Authority to hold back-to-back meetings like this. This was the third meeting in less than two weeks,” Stalin Dayanand, the founder of Vanashakti which is an NGO that has been leading the legal fight against the cutting of 2702 trees in Aarrey stated.

Last week a BMC Committee had visited the site and said that they won’t allow the car shed and suggested that the project should be shifted to Kanjurmarg.

Mr. Dayanand also alleged that the Tree Authority has given the clearance to cut the trees despite the fact that the case which he had filed against the above move is still awaiting its decision in the Bombay High Court.

According to the environmentalists, the construction of the Metro-3 car shed would lead to the destruction of 3,000 trees devastating the eco system.

Activists have also questioned the MMRC’s promise to plant thrice as many saplings as held elsewhere as an ecological compensation.

Importance of Trees for Mumbai:

Aarey colony is also referred to as the lungs of Mumbai city which is the only open space reaming in the city.According to the activist, the destruction of Aarey colony will have a devastating impact on the air quality of Mumbai.

According to the campaigners, Aarey is the world’s only forest in the middle of a modern metropolis and is home to not just a huge diversity of rare insects, reptiles and mammals including wild leopards, but also more than 7000 indigenous tribal people who have been living there in a wide spread 27 aboriginal Warli tribal hamlets here for centuries, in harmony with nature, protecting this forest.

We wish and sincerely hope that the nature is protected and entire Mumbai can get good quality of air for future as well…
