Arun Jaitley, former Union minister passes away at 66

Former Union minister Arun Jaitley has passed away at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Saturday, the hospital announced.

Arun Jaitley, 66, was undergoing treatment at the hospital for past several weeks.

“It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of Arun Jaitley,” the AIIMS said in a statement.

Arun Jaitley, a lawyer by profession, was one of the senior members of Bhartiya Janta Party. He was president of Student Union in his college days and he went on to complete LLB from University of Delhi. His knowledge helped BJP introduce many policies related to infrastructure, tax and investments. He was even BCCI Vice President for certain period of time. In the year 1975, for duration of 19 months he was under preventive detention and was in Thihar Jail.

Arun Jaitley had been a vital part in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet in the BJP government’s first term. He held all the finance and defence portfolios, and often acted as the chief troubleshooter of the government.

In May this year, he was admitted to AIIMS for treatment.

Arun Jaitley was unable to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election because of his health issues.

He had undergone a renal transplant on May 14, 2018 at AIIMS. During the period when Arun Jaitley was out of politics it was Railways Minister Piyush Goyal who stepped in place of him in the finance ministry at that time.

Jaitley, who had stopped attending office since early April last year, was back to the finance ministry on August 23, 2018.

In September 2014, he had undergone a bariatric surgery to correct the weight he had gained because he was suffering from diabetic issues for a long time.
